Perfume Makers of India: A Journey Through Scent and Craft
A six-night journey into the olfactory heart of India, moving from the refined tables of Lucknow to the ancient, smoke-filled distilleries of Kannauj.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
This itinerary traces the lineage of scent, connecting the royal patronage of the Nawabs with the mud-plastered kilns of the perfumers. It is an exploration of the deg-bhapka method—a 400-year-old hydro-distillation process that turns flowers into “liquid gold.”
The pace is deliberate and sensory. In Lucknow, the focus is on the culinary application of fragrance (Awadhi cuisine). In Kannauj, the journey shifts to the production floor: witnessing copper stills, sealing with clay, and condensing vapours into sandalwood oil. This is a narrative of alchemy, craft preservation, and sensory education, far removed from the standard tourist circuit.
Who This Trip Is For
This trip is curated for the design enthusiast, the fragrance collector, or the traveller seeking living heritage. It suits those willing to trade polished sightseeing for the grit of working distilleries and narrow market lanes.
It is not for those sensitive to strong scents or smoke, nor for those seeking a checklist of monuments. It is designed for those curious about the sociology of a dying craft and the chemistry of nature.
Highlights
Day 1 | Arrival in Lucknow
Arrive at Lucknow Airport, where a private chauffeur meets you for the transfer to your heritage hotel. The day is left unstructured to settle into the city’s leisurely pace.
Overnight: Lucknow
Day 2 | Lucknow — The Culinary Context
Before visiting the source of the scents, understand their end use. Spend the morning exploring the Residency or Bara Imambara to ground the history of the Nawabs of Oudh.
The evening focuses on a curated culinary walk. Experience the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb through its food, especially the Dum Pukht (slow oven) cooking style. Learn how edible perfumes (attars) are used in kebabs and biryanis to create the region’s sophisticated flavour profiles.
Overnight: Lucknow
Day 3 | Lucknow → Kannauj — The Perfume Capital
Drive to Kannauj (approx. 2 hours). The landscape shifts from the urban capital to the alluvial plains of the Ganges, ideal for rose and vetiver cultivation.
Check into a simple, clean hotel or a private guest house arranged for industry visitors. The afternoon is dedicated to a walk through the Bara Bazaar, a labyrinth of glass vials and essential oils. Meet an attar sazh (perfumer) to decode the difference between synthetic fragrance and pure ruh (soul of the plant).
Overnight: Kannauj
Day 4 | Kannauj — Fire, Mud & Copper
Start early at a traditional distillery to witness the deg-bhapka process. Watch artisans seal copper pots with a clay-cotton mash and manage wood fires by instinct rather than gauges.
Observe the distillation of Mitti Attar, the unique “scent of rain” derived from baked earth. The day is immersive and tactile; spend hours watching the vapour travel via bamboo reeds into sandalwood oil bases. It is a slow, rhythmic observation of ancient chemistry.
Overnight: Kannauj
Day 5 | Kannauj → Lucknow — Refined Return
Visit a flower farm early morning (season dependent: Damask roses in spring, jasmine or marigold in other months) to see the harvest before driving back to Lucknow.
Re-enter the city with a fresh perspective on the luxury goods trade. The evening is at leisure to explore the high-end perfumeries of Lucknow, comparing the raw product seen in Kannauj with the finished, packaged blends sold to the elite.
Overnight: Lucknow
Day 6 | Lucknow — Textiles & Design
Complement the olfactory experience with the visual. Visit the ateliers of Chikankari artisans to see the famous white-on-white embroidery of the region.
The rest of the day is flexible—visit the State Museum or relax at the hotel. Conclude with a private dinner that highlights the specific spice blends and fragrances learned about during the week.
