High peaks, terraced hills, and the walking rhythm of the Himalaya

Nepal

Nepal is where the Himalayas dictate the horizon, and daily life moves at the walking pace of the mountains.

Nepal, Between the Peak and the Plain

Nepal sits along the southern slopes of the Himalayas, wedged between the vastness of India and the Tibetan plateau. Its geography defines everything. The landscape shifts dramatically from the subtropical jungles of the Terai in the south to the high, glaciated peaks of the north.

In the Kathmandu Valley, layers of history and spirituality overlap. Ancient brick courtyards, Hindu shrines, and Buddhist stupas stand amidst the clamour of a modern, fast-growing capital. Away from the city, the pace slows completely. Travel here is often measured in days of walking rather than hours of driving. The hills are carved with agricultural terraces, and communities still operate on agrarian rhythms.

Nepal rewards travellers who accept a slower pace. The roads can be rough and the travel times deceptive. However, it rewards those who embrace a slower pace. Whether you are drinking butter tea in a high-altitude lodge or watching the morning mist clear over Phewa Lake in Pokhara, the country offers a profound sense of scale and quiet continuity.

SIGNATURE EXPERIENCES

Morning at Boudhanath Stupa

Join monks and pilgrims for the morning kora around one of the largest stupas in the world. The scent of incense and the sound of chanting provide a quiet introduction to Nepalese spirituality.

Wildlife in Chitwan National Park

Leave the mountains for the subtropical plains of the Terai. Travel quietly by wooden canoe down the Rapti River or take a jeep safari to look for one-horned rhinos and Bengal tigers.

Slow Days in Bandipur

Stop in this beautifully preserved Newari hill town located between Kathmandu and Pokhara. With no cars on its stone-paved streets, it offers a look at traditional architecture and rural mountain life.

Trekking the Annapurna Foothills

Walk the trails connecting Gurung villages in the shadow of the Annapurna range. Even the lower-altitude routes offer clear views of terraced hillsides and snow-capped peaks without the extreme demands of high-altitude mountaineering.

A Panauti Village Homestay

Stay with a local family in one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the country. Share a meal of homemade dal bhat and observe the daily agricultural and social routines of the community.

Reflecting in Lumbini

Visit the birthplace of Lord Buddha in the southern plains. Walk through the tranquil Sacred Garden and the international monastic zone in the early morning before the crowds arrive.

When to Visit

Nepal

Spring: March to May

The weather is warm and the days are clear. Rhododendrons bloom across the hillsides, adding colour to the trekking routes. This is an ideal time for moving through the mid-hills and mountain trails.

Summer: June to August

The monsoon season brings heavy rain and cloudy skies, which often obscure the mountains. Landslides can disrupt road travel, making this a challenging time for long journeys. Most travellers avoid the trails now.

Autumn: September to November

The classic travel season. The monsoon washes the dust from the air, leaving crystal-clear skies and sharp mountain views. This is the busiest time for trekking and coincides with major national festivals like Dashain.

Winter: December to February

Days in the valleys are sunny and pleasant, though nights get very cold. High-altitude trekking becomes difficult due to snow, but it is an excellent and quiet time to visit the southern plains and lower hill towns.
