The Subtropical South: Forests, Rivers, and Rhinos
An ecological journey into Nepal’s southern lowlands, exploring wildlife reserves and the communities that live alongside them.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
Most travellers imagine Nepal only as a country of high mountains and glaciers, but the southern plains tell a completely different story. The Terai is a warm, dense landscape of sal forests, rivers, and grasslands that support some of South Asia’s most important wildlife reserves.
This journey begins with a short night in Kathmandu before flying south to Chitwan National Park. Mornings often start on the Rapti River in a narrow canoe, drifting quietly past crocodiles and water birds while the forest wakes up around you. Later in the day, experienced naturalists guide you through the grasslands in search of one-horned rhinoceroses and other wildlife.
From there the route continues west to Bardia National Park, a much quieter and more remote reserve near the Indian border. Bardia feels wilder than Chitwan and offers one of the best chances in Nepal of spotting a Bengal tiger. The days follow the rhythm of the forest: early starts, long periods of quiet observation, and conversations with the Tharu communities who have lived alongside these ecosystems for generations. It reveals a side of Nepal many travellers never expect to see.
Who This Trip Is For
This itinerary tends to appeal to travellers who are genuinely interested in wildlife and conservation. It suits birders, photographers, and anyone who enjoys the slow patience required for observing animals in their natural environment.
You need to be comfortable with humidity, early mornings, and the unpredictability of jungle tracking. Wildlife never appears on command. The reward is a much deeper understanding of Nepal’s ecological diversity and the conservation work that has allowed species like the one-horned rhinoceros to recover. For travellers who have already seen the Himalayas, this journey shows an entirely different side of the country.
