The Experience

The air changes completely when you drive an hour out of Barcelona. Most people treat the city as the entire destination, fighting through crowds on Las Ramblas for a week, but the real soul of Catalonia lives in its coastal paths and stone farmhouses.

This route is about getting out of the urban center to engage with the landscape. We anchor the first two days in Barcelona, allowing just enough time to appreciate Gaudí’s bizarre, brilliant architecture and the food markets before leaving the city behind and heading north toward the vineyards and hills of Catalonia.

The rest of the week is a study in slowing down. We route you into the Penedès wine region to walk through vineyards and taste Cava right at the source. Then, the scenery shifts dramatically as you drive up into the Garrotxa volcanic zone, a lush, otherworldly area where the local cuisine is entirely dictated by the rich, dark soil. Finally, you drop down to the Costa Brava. Instead of the busy resort towns, we point you toward the small fishing villages and hidden coves, where your days are spent hiking the coastal trails, eating fresh cuttlefish, and swimming in the Mediterranean.

Who This Trip Is For

We usually suggest this to travellers who have already "done" the major European capitals or those who find heavy urban sightseeing exhausting.

It is perfect for food and wine lovers who want to trace their meals back to the source. You need to be comfortable driving a rental car for short stretches through the countryside and enjoy a vacation where a two-hour lunch and a coastal hike are the primary activities of the day.
