Salt, Pepper and Stone: The Southern Provinces
A seven-night immersion in Cambodia’s coastal south, where rivers meet salt flats and the sea smells of pepper and crab.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
This journey deliberately skips Angkor.
Instead, it turns south. After a gentle introduction to Phnom Penh (Cambodia’s capital on the Mekong River), you travel overland towards the coast. The landscape flattens. Rice fields give way to pepper vines and salt pans.
Kampot is your base first. It is a small riverside town about three hours south of Phnom Penh, known for its faded French-era shophouses and world-famous pepper. Life here moves slowly. Fishing boats pass quietly. Evenings are soft and unhurried.
From Kampot, a short 30-minute coastal drive brings you to Kep. Once a 1960s seaside retreat for Cambodia’s elite, it is now a low-key fishing town facing the Gulf of Thailand. The rhythm shifts again. Crab traps, island boats, quiet coastal walks.
Distances are short. Stays are two nights or more. There is structure, but also space. This is Cambodia at table level and field level, not monument scale.
Who This Trip Is For
Ideal for travellers who have already seen headline Southeast Asia, or for those who prefer texture to checklists.
It suits food-led explorers curious about how pepper is grown, salt is harvested, or crab is cooked minutes after leaving the sea. Couples or small groups wanting downtime without being tied to a resort will feel at home here.
This isn’t a temple-heavy itinerary, nor is it luxury-beach in the Maldives sense. It’s regional, grounded, and quietly immersive.
