Eastern Laos:Plateau to Peninsula
A short, focused journey linking the prehistoric plateau of Xieng Khouang in eastern Laos, near the Vietnam border, with the monastic calm and river bound rhythm of Luang Prabang.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
This route leaves the Mekong valley and heads east to Xieng Khouang, a high, windswept plateau near the Vietnam border. A short flight brings you to Phonsavan, gateway to the Plain of Jars, where thousands of stone vessels lie scattered across open grassland. Carved over two millennia ago, their purpose is still debated. Standing among them, with nothing but grassland around, the scale feels stark.
The region also carries more recent memory. Between the 1960s and 1975, during the Indochina War, eastern Laos became one of the most heavily bombed areas in the world as part of the wider Vietnam conflict. At the UXO Centre and the ruins of Muang Khoun, this history is encountered plainly, without presentation.
From here, the road returns west through forested mountains to Luang Prabang. Temple roofs and river lights reappear. The contrast between plateau and peninsula gives the journey its shape. Laos reveals itself through history as much as through landscape.
Who This Trip Is For
For travellers who are at ease with layered history and quieter places. It suits those drawn to archaeology and the recent past as much as to temple architecture and river towns.
Phonsavan and the Xieng Khouang plateau are remote and modest in infrastructure. Roads are longer, hotels simpler, and that spareness is part of the experience. This journey suits those who would rather go deeper than cover more ground. It calls for patience and the openness to linger where stories once lived. The route is compact and purposeful, far from the easier, more familiar Mekong loop.
