Highlights
The Experience
Leave Almaty behind and the road quickly opens into wide grasslands and desert valleys. This part of southeastern Kazakhstan is where the country feels most elemental.
Instead of rushing between cities, this journey stays largely within the national parks and mountain villages surrounding the old capital. The landscape shifts constantly: first the pale dunes of Altyn-Emel, then the colourful clay ridges of the Aktau mountains, and finally the dense spruce forests near the Kyrgyz frontier.
The small village of Saty becomes the heart of the trip. From here you walk through pine forests toward the Kolsai Lakes and explore the unusual submerged forest of Kaindy Lake. Evenings are quiet, spent in simple guesthouses with home-cooked meals and long views across the valley.
It is a slower rhythm of travel, allowing the mountains and open skies of the region to set the pace.
