Following the Ramayana Landscapes of Sri Lanka
Tracing the geography of one of South Asia’s great epics across mountains, forests, and ancient shrines.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
Sri Lanka feels very different when you travel through it with the Ramayana in mind.
Instead of simply seeing mountains, forests, and temples, the landscape begins to align with a much older story. Rivers, caves, and valleys are all tied to episodes from the epic.
This route connects the places traditionally associated with Sita, Ravana, and Hanuman. Beginning along the western coast, the journey climbs steadily into the dramatic highlands of Nuwara Eliya and Ella, where mist-covered mountains and waterfalls echo the scale of the ancient narrative.
The experience isn’t about religious pilgrimage as much as geography. The story becomes a way of understanding how the island’s terrain shaped the legends that grew around it.
Who This Trip Is For
This journey tends to appeal to travellers who enjoy cultural storytelling and mythology layered onto real landscapes. It works well for those familiar with the Ramayana but equally for anyone curious about how ancient narratives interact with geography.
The days involve moving through the central highlands, visiting temples, waterfalls, and caves that remain part of living tradition. It suits someone who enjoys conversation with local historians and priests, as much as quiet time walking through forests and mountain valleys.
Highlights
Day 1 — Munneswaram Temple
You begin by driving north from Colombo toward the coast, stopping at the temple complex of Munneswaram near Chilaw. According to local tradition, this is where Rama is believed to have prayed after the battle with Ravana.
Day 2 — Into the Hill Capital of Kandy
From the coast the journey turns inland, climbing gradually toward Kandy, Sri Lanka’s old royal capital. It’s a city where Hindu and Buddhist traditions have long lived side by side.
Day 3 — Climbing to Nuwara Eliya
The road continues upward through tea country, into the cooler mountain landscapes that local legends often connect with the ancient kingdom of Ravana.
Day 4 — Sita’s Garden at Hakgala
You visit the Seetha Amman Temple near Hakgala, surrounded by quiet forest. In local lore, this area is believed to be Ashok Vatika, the garden where Sita was kept during the epic.
Day 5 — Ravana Falls and Ella Gap
The route descends toward Ella, stopping at Ravana Falls and nearby caves tied to stories of the king himself. From the mountain passes you begin to see the southern plains opening below.
Day 6 — Pilgrimage Town of Kataragama
Further south lies Kataragama, one of Sri Lanka’s most important pilgrimage towns, where devotees from several faiths come to worship at the same sacred site.
Day 7 — Return to Colombo
The final day follows the southern coast back toward Colombo, completing a slow loop across the island that links landscapes with the ancient story behind them.
