The Steppe & The Sand: A Classic Mongolian Circuit
Tracing the path of the ancient Mongol Empire of Genghis Khan from the central grasslands to the deep dunes of the Gobi.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
Mongolia’s scale is difficult to comprehend. On a map it looks vast; on the ground it feels endless. Attempting to drive its entirety often leads to fatigue. This itinerary focuses instead on the country’s defining geographic markers — the rolling central steppes that shaped the Mongol Empire, the ancient capital of Kharkhorin, and the deep, elemental Gobi — while carefully controlling pacing. We begin in Ulaanbaatar before moving west to the wild horse reserves of Khustai and the 13th-century ruins that once anchored Genghis Khan’s world.
From there, the route descends into the arid expanse of the Gobi Desert. This is not a theatrical desert of dunes alone, but a wide, mineral landscape of wind and silence. Rather than returning overland across vast distances, the journey concludes with a domestic flight from Dalanzadgad, preserving energy and rhythm.
Days are spent observing the reintroduced Takhi horses, walking the shaded ice corridors of Yolyn Am gorge, and navigating the towering Khongoryn Els dunes. Nights settle into well-appointed ger camps that offer warmth and grounding within a rugged setting. The structure is deliberate, allowing travellers to experience Mongolia’s magnitude without being defined by long transit days.
Who This Trip Is For
Designed for first-time visitors who want Mongolia’s essential landscapes without enduring punishing overland loops. It suits travellers who appreciate vast, open environments and accept the inherent simplicity of ger camps, yet value smart routing and logistical discipline.
A baseline level of mobility is required for dune walks and gorge hikes. This is not a luxury-resort holiday; infrastructure outside the capital remains elemental. By incorporating a domestic return flight, the itinerary appeals to those who want scale without exhaustion. It provides a commercially reliable introduction to Mongolia, balancing heritage, geology and wildlife with realistic pacing.
Highlights
Day 1 | Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
Arrival in Mongolia’s compact, high-altitude capital. A private transfer brings you to your city hotel, where Soviet geometry meets modern glass. The remainder of the day is intentionally unstructured. Walk the central square, step into a local café, or simply rest and acclimatise to the light and altitude.
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar
Day 2 | Ulaanbaatar → Khustai National Park
Drive west into open country (approx. 2 hours) as the city gives way to grassland. By late afternoon, track the reintroduced Takhi horses with a conservation ranger. Watching them move across the steppe offers a first glimpse into Mongolia’s older rhythm.
Overnight: Khustai
Day 3 | Khustai → Kharkhorin
Continue west toward Kharkhorin, once the capital of the Mongol Empire. Visit Erdene Zuu Monastery, its white stupas aligned against the horizon, and the local museum for context on Chinggis Khaan’s vast 13th-century expansion. The land here feels historically charged yet quietly pastoral.
Overnight: Kharkhorin
Day 4 | Kharkhorin → Ongi
Drive south as the terrain subtly shifts toward the Gobi. Pause at the ruins of Ongi Monastery, a reminder of Mongolia’s turbulent 20th-century purges. The landscape grows wider, emptier, more elemental.
Overnight: Saikhan-Ovoo
Day 5 | Ongi → Khongoryn Els
Arrive at the Khongoryn Els dunes by late afternoon, where sand rises unexpectedly from gravel plains. A camel ride across the lower ridges leads to a sunset ascent. From the crest, the Gobi stretches in near silence.
Overnight: Khongoryn Els
Day 6 | Bayanzag — Flaming Cliffs
Visit Bayanzag, the Flaming Cliffs, where some of the world’s first dinosaur eggs were discovered. In late afternoon light, the sandstone turns deep ochre against the pale desert floor. It feels prehistoric and starkly beautiful.
Overnight: Gobi Desert
Day 7 | Yolyn Am Gorge
Walk through Yolyn Am in the Gurvan Saikhan range, a narrow gorge where ice can linger even in summer. The shift from desert heat to mountain cool is abrupt and memorable.
Overnight: Dalanzadgad
Day 8 | Flight to Ulaanbaatar
Morning flight back to the capital, avoiding a long overland return. The afternoon is at leisure — a museum visit, a monastery, or simply time to recalibrate before departure.
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar
Day 9 | Departure
Private transfer to the airport for onward journey.
