The Southern Silk Road
Ancient cities, desert trade routes, and Timurid architecture

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
Most visitors focus on the mountains around Almaty, but the deeper historical layers of Kazakhstan lie further south along the old Silk Road routes.
This journey follows those ancient corridors of trade and conquest. After a short introduction in Almaty, you travel south toward Shymkent, where the landscape opens into wide plains dotted with farms, roadside cafés, and small market towns.
Shymkent itself has a lively, Central Asian feel. Streets around the bazaar are filled with fruit sellers, tea houses, and the steady rhythm of daily trade that has defined this region for centuries.
From here the route traces the footsteps of merchants and caravans that once crossed Central Asia. The ruins of Otrar mark the site of a once-powerful Silk Road city destroyed during the Mongol campaigns. Walking through its excavated walls gives a rare sense of how vast these desert trading centres once were.
Further south, the town of Turkistan holds one of the region’s most important architectural monuments: the vast mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Pilgrims still gather in the square beneath its blue domes, and the surrounding streets are filled with small cafés and quiet courtyards where travellers pause between visits.
Between these historic sites the journey moves through open steppe and dry valleys that still feel remote. It reveals a side of Kazakhstan shaped less by mountains and more by centuries of movement across the Eurasian interior.
