Description:

The Experience

This itinerary is shaped by the philosophy of “slow travel”—the art of not rushing to tick off attractions. It transitions from the coastal trade history of Kochi to the “God’s Own Country” interior. The focus is on allowing the world to move slower, specifically along the banks of Vembanad Lake.

It avoids the frenetic pace of standard tours. Instead, it prioritises immersive experiences: drifting on eco-friendly houseboats made of bamboo and jute, witnessing traditional Kathakali performances, and observing village life where narrow canals replace roads. This is a sensory engagement with the “sparkling jewels” of the backwaters.

Who This Trip Is For

This trip is designed for couples or families seeking relaxation and leisure as key ingredients. It suits those who want to “merely be,” appreciating the journey itself rather than a checklist. It is ideal for travellers who prefer boutique heritage stays and floating vessels over large commercial hotels. It requires a willingness to disconnect and engage with a slower, water-based rhythm.

Highlights

Day 1 | Arrival in Kochi

Arrive at Cochin International Airport. A private chauffeur transfers you to your heritage hotel in Fort Kochi. The day is left unstructured to recover from travel and acclimatise to the humid, tropical air.
Overnight: Fort Kochi

Day 2 | Kochi — Layers of History

Explore the colonial layers of the city. Walk past the Chinese fishing nets and colonial bungalows that mark this ancient trade port.
In the evening, explore the Jewish Quarter in Mattancherry. The focus is on the distinct “patchwork” of cultures—from Portuguese to Dutch—that defines the coast, much like the diverse culinary heritage found here.
Overnight: Fort Kochi

Day 3 | Kochi → Kumarakom — The Great Lake

Drive to Kumarakom (approx. 1.5 hours), nestled on the periphery of the massive Vembanad Lake. Check into a lake-facing resort where the view is a “massive expanse of water peppered with tiny boats”.
In the evening, embark on a sunset motorboat cruise. Watch the sky transition into a “mesmerising shade of red” as the sun bids farewell, a vital ritual of the region.
Overnight: Kumarakom

Day 4 | Kumarakom — Culture & Canals

Spend the morning exploring the narrow canals by small canoe. Observe the unique geography where locals live on narrow strips of land, using long boats as their primary mode of transport.
In the evening, attend a Kathakali performance at the resort. This traditional dance form, performed by local artists, showcases the vibrant, storytelling culture of Kerala.
Overnight: Kumarakom

Day 5 | The Houseboat — A Floating Rendezvous

Board a traditional houseboat at noon for a private cruise. These vessels are eco-friendly marvels constructed from jute, bamboo, and wood, designed to resemble traditional row boats.
A private chef on board prepares fresh local cuisine. As the boat glides through the “intricate network of backwaters”, the experience is one of pure “doing nothing”—the essence of slow travel.
Overnight: Houseboat (or return to resort depending on preference).

Day 6 | Kumarakom → Marari — The Quiet Coast

Disembark and drive a short distance to Marari or a quiet stretch of the Alappuzha coast.
The shift is from the backwaters to the Arabian Sea. Check into a beachside property that emphasises privacy. The afternoon is for walking the shoreline, offering a contrast to the enclosed greenery of the canals.
Overnight: Marari / Alappuzha

Day 7 | Marari — Wellness & Stillness

The day is entirely at leisure. Engage in an Ayurvedic therapy session or simply relax by the sea. The goal is to absorb the “essence of the place” at an unhurried pace.
Enjoy a final dinner featuring “ghar ka khana” (home-style) coastal flavours—appams and stews—celebrating the light, everyday food of the region.
Overnight: Marari / Alappuzha

Day 8 | Departure from Kochi

A private transfer takes you back to Cochin International Airport. You leave with the “warmth like no other” that the gurgling waters and birdcalls of Kerala provide.
