Description:

The Experience

This itinerary moves deliberately from the capital to the semi-arid fringe of the Thar Desert, and finally to the royal city of Jaipur. It is designed to contrast two distinct pillars of Indian history: the mercantile wealth of the Marwaris and the feudal patronage of the Rajputs.
The pace is measured. In Delhi, the focus is on recovery and soft re-entry. In Shekhawati, days are spent walking through “open-air art galleries,” decoding frescoes that depict everything from mythology to Victorian trains. In Jaipur, the lens shifts from standard sightseeing to design, craft preservation, and private access. This is a narrative of trade, art, and architecture, experienced without the rush of a standard tour.

Who This Trip Is For

This journey is curated for the global Indian or the returning traveller who has already “done” the Golden Triangle. It suits those interested in architectural conservation, textile history, and the sociology of the merchant classes.
It avoids the heavy tourist traffic of Agra and the commercialised intensity of standard Rajasthan circuits. It is ideal for families seeking to reconnect with roots through a sophisticated, comfortable lens.

Highlights

Day 1 | Arrival in Delhi

Arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport. A private chauffeur meets you for the transfer to your hotel in New Delhi. The day is left unstructured to account for jet lag.
Overnight: New Delhi

Day 2 | Delhi — The Soft Warm-Up

Avoid the monument fatigue of a standard city tour. The morning is for a gentle walk through Sunder Nursery or Lutyens’ Delhi, allowing for a quiet re-introduction to the country. In the evening, enjoy a curated culinary walk or a private chef’s table experience. The focus is on contemporary Indian flavours or the sophisticated heritage cuisine of Old Delhi, serving as a palate primer for the journey ahead.
Overnight: New Delhi

Day 3 | Delhi → Shekhawati — Into the Open-Air Gallery

Depart for the Shekhawati region (approx. 5–6 hours). The drive shifts from urban sprawl to the semi-arid landscape of the Thar fringe. Check into a restored heritage property—formerly a merchant’s mansion—in Churu or Mandawa. These towns were once trading hotspots on the caravan routes, where wealthy Banias and Marwaris commissioned lavish homes. The evening is at leisure to settle into the rhythm of a smaller town.
Overnight: Churu / Mandawa

Day 4 | Shekhawati — Frescoes & Forgotten Wealth

Begin with a walking tour of the local havelis (mansions). Unlike the forts of kings, these were private statements of status by merchants who migrated to Calcutta and Bombay but sent money home. Explore the specific frescoes that make this region unique: look for the quirks where local artists depicted European influence—cars, gramophones, and trains—alongside traditional mythological motifs. Visit Ramgarh, once one of the richest towns in 19th-century India, to see the Ramgopal Poddar Chhatri and its elaborate murals.
Overnight: Churu / Mandawa

Day 5 | Nawalgarh / Fatehpur — Conservation & Craft

Drive a short distance to Nawalgarh or Fatehpur. Visit the Nadine Le Prince Haveli or the Podar Haveli Museum to understand the massive undertaking of restoring these crumbling edifices. This day offers a deeper interaction with the region’s current reality—the tension between neglect and restoration. Meet with a local conservationist or curator if available. The afternoon allows for exploring local antique shops, where remnants of the havelis often end up.
Overnight: Churu / Mandawa

Day 6 | Shekhawati → Jaipur — The Royal Contrast

Drive to Jaipur (approx. 3–4 hours). The transition is palpable: from the organic, narrow lanes of the merchant towns to the planned, pink grid of the royal capital. Check into a boutique hotel away from the main tourist drag. The evening is reserved for a private viewing or a quiet dinner, avoiding commercial cultural shows.
Overnight: Jaipur

Day 7 | Jaipur — Design, Archives & Living Craft

Bypass the crowded Amber Fort. Instead, focus on Jaipur’s status as a hub of craft and design. Visit the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing to understand the legacy of textile block printing. Explore the City Palace, focusing on the private quarters or the textile archives rather than the public courtyards. Alternatively, visit Jawahar Kala Kendra to see Charles Correa’s modern architectural interpretation of the city’s nine-square grid. The day ends with a look at high-end contemporary design houses that are modernising traditional Rajasthani craft.
Overnight: Jaipur
