Berlin & Saxon Switzerland
From Berlin’s layered history to the sandstone valleys and forest trails of Saxon Switzerland in eastern Germany.

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
Berlin is not a city that reveals itself in a day or two. Give it time. Walk along the remnants of the Wall, wander through neighbourhood markets, and spend slow afternoons in the museums of Museum Island.
Then the journey shifts. A relaxed train ride south follows the Elbe into Saxon Switzerland, where the landscape changes completely. Sandstone cliffs rise above thick forests near the Czech border.
Instead of moving constantly, stay in the tiny village of Schmilka. Much of it runs on renewable energy and life moves quietly here. Bread is baked in an old mill, beer is brewed the traditional way, and walking trails begin right outside the door.
Days are simple: hiking between strange rock formations, swimming in forest streams, or just sitting with the stillness of the valley.
The contrast works beautifully. Berlin is intense and layered. Saxon Switzerland feels calm and elemental. Together they make a surprisingly balanced way to experience modern Germany.
Who This Trip Is For
This works well if you enjoy cities but don’t want to spend the entire trip in one. Berlin is fascinating, but it rewards curiosity and patience rather than rushing through a checklist of sights.
Saxon Switzerland is the opposite. It is quiet, full of forest trails and small villages where life moves slowly. The shift from the capital to the valley makes the journey feel balanced.
I would suggest this especially for returning visitors to Europe, or travellers who enjoy culture, walking landscapes and thoughtful travel rather than the usual tourist routes.
