Across the Kazakh Steppe
From the leafy avenues of Almaty to the improbable skyline of Astana

Trip Overview
Description:
The Experience
Walking through the Green Bazaar in Almaty, the scent of dried fruits, spices, and fresh bread fills the air. It is a good introduction to Kazakhstan, a country where Central Asian traditions and Soviet history sit side by side.
When travellers ask how to approach a place this vast for the first time, we suggest embracing the contrast between landscape and city. We start in Almaty, a relaxed, tree-lined city backed by the snow peaks of the Tien Shan mountains. From there the journey moves east into the red rock formations of Charyn Canyon and the quiet alpine lakes near the Kyrgyz border.
Rather than rushing between flights, we place you on the overnight train heading north across the steppe. Waking up to that endless horizon rolling past your window is part of understanding the scale of the country.
The trip finishes in Astana, a capital that seems to rise straight out of the grasslands. Its wide boulevards and futuristic buildings form a striking contrast to the natural landscapes you have just crossed.
Who This Trip Is For
This route works well for first-time visitors who want to grasp the geography of Kazakhstan without exhausting travel days. It combines light outdoor walks with time in two very different cities, showing both the natural and modern sides of the country.
You do not need specialist trekking ability, but you should be comfortable walking on uneven ground and open to the experience of one overnight train journey. It suits travellers who enjoy seeing how landscapes and cities interact, and who want a balanced introduction rather than a deep expedition.
